Go south of Kagoshima for around 380 km, situated almost exactually in between Kagoshima and Okinawa, is Amami.
Its reputation as ‘the tropical heaven’ comes from the warm climate (The average annual temperature is 21.3℃!).
Transparent sea blue and sky stretching out for miles, you are surrounded by so much beauty just like what you might see in a film.
The corals surround the island and act as a barrier for the thousands of different fish and other sea life which live among it. Glimpse of turtle, whale, and even manta. In May to June season, some parts the island you might be lucky enough to witness turtles laying eggs.
One of the biggest attractions of Amami is the bright colored flowers and nnowhere is the diversity of life on Amami more apparent than at Mangrove virgin forest park. Hour long guided tours (Japanese only) by kayak of the mangroves for a reasonable 1,500 Yen leave from behind the park center. The round trip down the river shows off many of the unique fish, plants and crabs of the area. In joy, when the festival is being held, will be the high season for beautiful flowers such as Hibiscus, bougainvillea, Crinum asiaticum, just the few of the vast different types of rare plants growing on the island.
